Next week is critical for those behind a local effort to bring 17 miles of light rail to Durham and Orange counties, a project expected to support 23,000 passenger trips each day by 2040.

That’s when GoTriangle will ask county commissioners in Durham and Orange to sign letters of commitment for funding. The purpose behind the “non-binding” pledges is to help prove to the feds that local entities will be able to bridge the funding gap that's the result of a project funding cap by the state General Assembly.

Joe Milazzo, executive director of the Regional Transportation Alliance, stressed the importance of the project Friday in an email.

"Our growing region requires a high-capacity, robust regional transit connection between Durham and Chapel Hill," he wrote.
